The history of computers began with the abacus, a simple counting tool likely invented in ancient Babylonia in the fourth century B.C. The first mechanical calculators were manufactured for sale in the 1640's. During the industrial revolution, weaving looms were in use that were able to read patterns from holes punched on small sheets of hardwood. This was followed with the first mass-produced calculator in 1820. In World War II, the Germans developed the Enigma machine to encode secret information. This led the allied forces to build their own machine capable of breaking the Enigma Code. In 1943 the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) was designed at Penn State followed shortly after by the EDVAC machine which the US patent office recognized as the first computer.
