Ice hockey evolved from the Irish field game called Hurley which is played at all times of the year in Ireland on a field with a ball and stick. The cold winters of Canada made Hurley a difficult game to play in the snow covered fields, so the game was moved onto the ice. This new game called "Hurley on Ice" was popular in the early 1800's on the east coast of Canada. By the late 1800's Hurley became what we know as hockey.
