July 4th is celebrated as America's Independence Day, the date that America officially split from Britain's rule and the beginning of the American Revolution. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia wrote the original resolution on June 7, 1776, that called for the Continental Congress to declare the United States officially free from British rule. That same week, Thomas Jefferson was appointed to draft the official resolution that became known as the Declaration of Independence. Congress officially adopted the revolution on July 4th, 1776. Only four American holidays are still celebrated on their original calendar days: Halloween, Christmas, New Year's Day and Independence Day.
